PRESENTATION OF THE INSTITUTE – MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The Institute of Chemistry of Materials and Media of Poitiers (IC2MP) is a joint interdisciplinary research unit of the University of Poitiers and the CNRS (INC and INSU) in the field of chemistry and geosciences of the surface (UMR 7285 ). Created in 2012, it results from the merger of four UMRs (LACCO, LCME, SRSN and HYDRASA) historically present in Poitiers for more than 40 years. It includes about 260 people (100 researchers and teacher-researchers and 50 permanent technical staff, and about 110 non-permanent including 90 doctoral students).

Since its creation, IC2MP has developed a scientific policy around sustainable chemistry by integrating more specifically (1) the synthesis of molecules and materials according to atom and energy saving processes and (2) their interactions with natural environments ( reactivity, transfer, bioaccumulation, persistence, etc.) This chemistry-geoscience association allows IC2MP to integrate environmental issues over a wide area of the value chain of a process by integrating in a global way all the steps of a process of transformation of a chemical compound and to be able to propose scientific and technological solutions from design to environmental implications.

The research focuses on resources (carbon, water, natural molecules), their transformations and their interactions with natural environments. Emphasis is placed on the aspect of i) reactivity in terms of processes (catalysis, catalytic materials, innovative synthesis methods, reaction mechanisms, low temperature activation) and ii) in terms of interactions with natural environments or synthesis (dynamics of transfer of contaminants, transformation / elimination of micropollutants or by-products, degradation mechanism). The idea underlying this common project is the concept of life cycle according to the adage “nothing is lost, everything is recovered”. This scientific strategy of the unit falls within the framework of the major societal challenges defined by the authorithy, at the regional or national level by the National Agency for Research but also in the priorities of the European Union (H2020 programs).

The strength of IC2MP also lies in the multidisciplinary and complementary nature of the research themes developed in the five teams by researchers as well as by engineers and technicians localized in administrative services, on analytical and technological platforms or in teams. The lab also regularly welcomes students and researchers from around the world.

IC2MP has a very important analytical park gathered in the platform PLATINA which allows to analyze the texture and the structure of the materials as well as the organic molecules in different media. Most of the equipments are financed mainly by CPER / FEDER Nouvelle Aquitaine funds.

IC2MP is an open laboratory which is in the heart of national academic research networks (INCREASE, Oncosphere, Water, Hydrogen …) and international networks (Green Network, IEA, clays association, UMI Shanghai mirror laboratory …) leading to many scientific collaborations . The teams have always developed numerous partnerships with industrials ranging from small businesses to big compagnies in the form of research contracts. The unit’s funding (€ 4 million) comes mainly from the ANR, the European Union, industrial contracts and medical foundations.

IC2MP also relies on the courses offered at the University of Poitiers: Bachelor and Masters in Chemistry and Geosciences and Engineering School (ENSI Poitiers).

La thématique générale sur laquelle travaille notre équipe, HydrASA (Hydrogéologie, Argiles, Sols, Altérations) porte sur la compréhension et la modélisation des transferts dans les géosystèmes réactifs.

SAMCat est spécialisée dans le développement de matériaux catalytiques et électrocatalytiques pour des applications principalement dans les domaines de l’énergie (nouveaux carburants, production et utilisation de l’hydrogène…) et de l’environnement (traitement des effluents gazeux et de l’eau…).

La catalyse hétérogène occupe une place primordiale dans les procédés industriels essentiellement en raison de la stabilité des catalyseurs solides mis en œuvre et de la récupération aisée des produits de la réaction permettant de développer, à grande échelle, des procédés continus ou semi-continus. L’introduction progressive du carbone renouvelable (biomasse, CO2, déchets) dans les procédés chimiques, la variabilité des matières premières (fossile et/ou renouvelable) ainsi que l’intensification des procédés ont radicalement changé le visage de la catalyse qui doit faire face aujourd’hui à de nouveaux verrous scientifiques et technologiques.
