Who are you ?
I am currently an Associate Professor in computational Physics at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in the United States. Prior to moving to Las Vegas, I obtained my bachelor’s degree in materials science from a university in China, and I completed my Ph.D. at Stony Brook University in the USA.
Why are you at IC2MP ?
In the past, I have participated in two workshops organized by Prof. Gilles Frapper at IC2MP, and I have collaborated with Gilles on several projects. Last year, Gilles extended an invitation to apply for a one-month visiting professorship at IC2MP and the University of Poitiers, and I feel honored to have this opportunity to visit Poitiers and further explore research collaborations with colleagues here.
Which is now your main project?
At UNLV, my research group focuses on utilizing advanced computational methods to theorize and design new materials. My students and I are actively developing open source codes for high-throughput modeling of materials. Together with Prof. Frapper, we are planning to implement a metaheuristic approach to design and develop metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through an “intelligent” exploration of the vast possibilities arising from combinations of metal/ligand/counter ions.
Which qualities/characteristics are essential for a scientist?
In my opinion, vision and passion are the most crucial qualities for a scientist. My interest in physics and chemistry originated during my high school years. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I discovered that while I lacked proficiency in laboratory work, I excelled in theory and programming. As a result, I decided to pursue a career as a theorist, and it has proven to be a successful path for me thus far.
Do you have something else to tell us?
Although I have visited Poitiers twice in the past, I haven’t had the opportunity to explore the country extensively. I am eager to learn more about Poitiers and France as a whole. From this point forward, I plan to dedicate myself to learning French to enhance my experience during my time here.
And last question, what do you like in France ?
Food and wine !
